Assignment #2 John Cage Is the Man

Image

John Cage was successful for his career in music because he was not afraid to express his form of sound and method as a professional composer. At the time of its release 4 minuets and 33 seconds sounded like an awful career move for any high profiled composer such as John Cage. Still taking the risk and performing such a piece of silence, showed a great amount of dedication and innovation to ones profession in music.  While performing 4 minuets and 33 seconds time becomes the only fixed element in this piece as sound and the way it is left to be interpreted becomes different every time it is performed. The piece forces one to deal and appreciate the sounds that are often ignored in everyday life. Though the piece is simple it is unique because it always changes. The sounds through out the performance blends with time and the space around it bending each sound to its own individual performance. Though usually the audience is traditionally meant to enjoy a concert, 4 minutes and 33 seconds switches the roles of the audience and musicians as the conductor John Cage and his pit also become part of the audience. 4 minuets and 33 seconds is the only musical piece that can actually bring the audience, the pit, and the composer together through the sense of sound.

Lost rules of John Cage.

Rule Eleven: Don’t be afraid to question your self when in a leadership position you could catch something before others do.

Rule Twelve: Do something daring everyday, it doesn’t have to be to huge but big enough to make sure you learn from it.
